Fascinating Bee & Wasp Facts

  • Look at the body! Honeybees are fuzzy, plump, and brownish-yellow. Yellow Jackets (a type of wasp) are thinner, have shiny smooth bodies, and have distinct, bright yellow and black bands. Yellow jackets are much more aggressive.

  • Generally, yes. The barbed stinger of a honeybee is pulled out of its body after stinging, causing the bee to die. Wasps and hornets have smooth stingers, allowing them to sting repeatedly without harming themselves.

  • If you kill a colony and leave the honeycomb, the melting honey can seep through your walls, attracting other severe pests like mice, ants, and cockroaches, and potentially causing mold and structural damage.

  • Very common! While aerial yellow jacket nests hang from trees, many species build huge, aggressive colonies underground in abandoned rodent burrows. They will aggressively swarm if the ground nest is disturbed by lawnmowers or foot traffic.
